PURPOSE: Provided is a method of using a fugitive substance to prepare multiphase porous polymeric particles, an aqueous dispersion of the porous particles formed thereby, and porous particles having a polymeric phase and a pore filling phase including a pore filler and, optionally, a gaseous phase. CONSTITUTION: The method of preparing an aqueous dispersion of a plurality of porous particles, wherein the porous particles comprise at least one polymeric phase and at least one pore filling phase, comprises the steps of: a) forming a reaction mixture in a closed pressure vessel, the reaction mixture comprising: i) at least one monomer; ii) water; iii) a dispersing agent; iv) at least one fugitive substance; and v) at least one pore filler; b) forming a plurality of droplets comprising the monomer, the fugitive substance, and the pore filler as a dispersed phase in water; c) polymerizing the monomer; d) causing the polymeric phase and the pore filling phase to phase separate from one another, forming the porous particles; and e) reducing the pressure in the pressure vessel to atmospheric pressure; and wherein the pore filling phase comprises the pore filler. |
