PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an extra fine steel wire for a spring which has excellent heat resistance and is suitable as a spring of a contact probe, or the like. SOLUTION: The extra fine steel wire for springs contains, by mass, 0.7 to 1.0% C, 0.5 to 1.5% Si and 0.3 to 1.0% Mn, and has a wire diameter of <=200μm. The area ratio of pro-eutectoid ferrite in the structure in the cross-section of the steel wire is <=5.0%. In the case of the extra fine spring used under energizing, or when using environmental temperature is high, the setting of the spring can be prevented.
