PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic drive system capable of preventing water as a working fluid from being decomposed by preventing the efficiency of actuators such as a hydraulic cylinder and a hydraulic motor forming a working device from being lowered, and an optimum operation of equipment such as a flow control valve from being obstructed due to an increase in resistance (back pressure) in a return flow passage caused by an increase in distance between the working device and a hydraulic pressure generating device. SOLUTION: This hydraulic drive system using water as a hydraulic fluid comprises the working devices 10, 20, and 30 for working an object and a hydraulic pressure generating device 40 for generating high-pressure water for driving the working devices 10, 20, and 30. A main tank 41 is installed in the hydraulic pressure generating device 40, an auxiliary tank 54 is installed in the return flow passage 52 allowing to flow the working fluid from constitutent devices of the working devices 10, 20, and 30, and a water disposing device 56 is installed in a flow passage 57 allowing to flow the working fluid from the auxiliary tank 54 to the main tank 41.
