PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a stable rotational information, by keeping any noises from being mixed into a pulse signal outputted from a rotary encoder, even if noises mix into the rotary encoder connected to a motor. SOLUTION: The rotary encoder is so arranged as to be separated into an RE optical unit 56 and an RE electrical unit 58. An optical signal is supplied to a rotating encoding plate 64 through an optical fiber cable 120 from a light source 124 for RE of the RE electrical unit 58, and the optical signal passing through the encoding plate 64 is supplied to a photodetecting part 122, having photodiodes 134 and 136 through the optical cable 120. With such an arrangement, electromagnetic noise will not mix into the RE electrical unit 58 from the RE optical unit 56, thereby enabling obtaining of an A-phase pulse, a B- phase pulse and a Z-phase pulse, as stable rotational position detection signals.
