PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To form a uniform image in the main scanning direction of a photoreceptor by eliminating causes of nonuniformity, such as the inhomogeneity of the photoreceptor painting and partial degradation. SOLUTION: An image forming apparatus is provided with: a measuring means 104 which reads the electrical potential of a photoreceptor 103 within the scan width while moving in the main scanning direction of the photoreceptor 103; a detecting means 102 which detects a signal when scanning the photoreceptor 103 with a laser beam; a first correction means 106 which adjusts the optical power on the surface of the photoreceptor 103 so that the power is kept constant on the basis of displacement of the optical power of an optical system 105 within the scan width; a calculating means 107 which applies correction to the first correction output on the basis of the measurement output; a second correction means 108 which further applies correction to the calculation output by taking account of the amount of correction corresponding to the degradation or characteristics of the photoreceptor 103; and a control means 109 which controls, on the basis of the second correction output, formation of a specific pattern on the photoreceptor 103 which carries a toner image visualizing an electrostatic latent image.
