PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve the problems of the low designing freedom of a support, and the impossibility of increasing resistance to corrosion in a conventional magnetic function device. SOLUTION: A magnetic element 22 is shaped in such a manner that in order to prevent the outer parts 30a and 31a of lower and upper shield layers 30 and 31 protruded to both side ends of 25b of a trailing side ABS surface 25 but not to both side ends of a slider from being exposed from a protective layer 23, the outer portions 30a and 31a are retreated more than a magnetic function part G. Thus, a magnetic head M2 is manufactured, which is capable of reducing a floating amount between the magnetic function part G and a disk, increasing slider designing freedom, increasing resistance to corrosion, and dealing with a high recording density.
