PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a wear resistant high strength steel which has excellent hardenability, weldability, machinability and cost effectiveness as well as hardness, temper softening resistance and impact resistance. SOLUTION: The steel has a composition containing, by weight, 0.25 to 0.35% C, 1.00 to 1.50% Si, 0.50 to 1.50% Mn, <=0.020% P, 0.008 to 0.015% S, <=1.2% Ni, 0.30 to 0.55% Cr, 0.15 to 0.50% Mo, 0.005 to 0.050% Ti, and 0.0005 to 0.0050% B, and in which the value of R defined by the following formula of R=1.2×Si (wt.%)+0.3×Ni (wt.%)+0.3×Cr (wt.%)+5×Mo (wt.%) is >=2.5. The steel is produced by hot rolling.
