PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent an inconvenient situation which may afterward arise by mingling of recording made by different encoding methods to a recording medium. SOLUTION: The recording device and method of subjecting the recording medium which can be recorded by using the encoding methods varying with each of prescribed recording units to recording by using the prescribed encoding method, in which the prescribed encoding method used for recording and the encoding method already used relating to the recording medium loaded in the device are compared (step 35) and the prescribed outputting is performed in accordance with the result of the comparison (step 36). When the unrecorded recording medium is loaded into the device, the encoding method used in the recording of the previous time and the encoding method set for the purpose of recording of this time are compared and the prescribed outputting is performed in accordance with the result of the comparison.
