Methods of preventing or treating diseases in association with a decrease in the expression of AOP-1 gene or AOP-1 which comprise: (1) transferring a nucleic acid encoding AOP-1 or a nucleic acid encoding a polypeptide having an amino acid sequence derived from the amino acid sequence of AOP-1 by additio n, deletion or substitution of one or more amino acids and having the function of AOP-1, or (2) administering a substance enhancing the expression of AOP-1 gene, a substance enhancing the production of AOP-1 or a substance enhancing the function of AOP-1.
