A method for making a sensor is disclosed comprising using a sensing electrode (20) having a first and second side. Using a reference electrode (22) having a first and second side and a second electrical lead in electrical communication with the reference electrode (22). Disposing an electrolyte (30) between the first side of sensing electrode (20) and the first side of reference electrode (22). Disposing a first side of a protective layer (32) adjacent to the side of sensing electrode (20). Mixing a metal oxide, a fugitive material, and a solvent to form a mixture. Applying the mixture to a second side of the protective layer (32) and calcining the sensor to form the protective coating (31) on the protective layer (32) second side.
