An article is coated with a multi-layer coating comprising at least one nickel layer (13) deposited on the surface of the article (12), a palladium/nickel alloy layer (20) deposited on the nickel layer (13), a refractory metal, preferably zirconium, layer (22) deposited on the palladium/nickel alloy layer (20), a sandwich layer (26) comprised of alternating layers (28,30) of refractory metal compound and refractory metal deposited on the refractory metal layer (22), a refractory metal compound layer (32), preferably zirconium nitride, deposited on the sandwich layer (26), and a layer (34) comprised of a refractory metal oxide or the reaction products of a refractory metal, oxygen and nitrogen deposited on the refractory metal compound layer (32).
