The method involves determining the distance to and relative speed of an obstruction from data detected by at least one sensor (10,12,14) and activating the safety system if a threshold is exceeded whereby an impact is detected as inevitable. The system can be activated with different parameters depending on a pre-detected accident severity so the restraining forces acting on the occupants are set depending on the detected severity.
