An ink jet recording medium having excellent image reproducibility, ink-drying property and pencil writing property has an ink receiving layer, formed on a substrate, including porous xerogel pigment particles, wherein the surface of the ink receiving layer has a pencil scratch value of 50g or more determined by a pencil scratch tester for coated film in accordance with Japanese Industrial Standard K 5401-1969.
