PURPOSE: A cathode active material for a lithium secondary battery and its preparation method are provided, to improve discharge capacity, cycle lifetime and electric power amount characteristic. CONSTITUTION: The cathode active material comprises 10-90 wt% of a compound selected from the group consisting of amorphous or crystalline metal hydroxides, metal oxyhydroxides, metal oxycarbonates and metal hydroxycarbonates, or at least one lithium compound represented by the formula 1 to 9 having a surface treated layer containing metal oxides; and 10-90 wt% of at least one lithium compound represented by the formula 1 to 9(formula 1: LixMn(1-y)M'yA2, formula 2: LixMn(1-y)M'yO(2-z)Az, formula 3: LiMn2O(4-z)Az, formula 4: LixMn(2-y)M'yA4, formula 5: LixB(1-y)M"yA2, formula 6: LixBO(2-z)Az, formula 7: LixNi(1-y)CoyO(2-z)Az, formula 8: LixNi(1-y-z)CoyM"zA2, formula 9: LixNi(1-y'-z')Mny'M'z'Aα), wherein 0.95 <=x<=1.1; 0<=y<=0.5; 0<=z<=0.5; 0<=y'<=0.5; 0<=z'<=0.1; 0<α<=2; M' is at least one selected from the group consisting of Al, Co, Cr, Fe, Mg, Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Ga, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; M'' is at least one selected from the group consisting of Al, Cr, Mn, Fe, Mg, Sc, Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, Ga, Tb , Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; A is selected from the group consisting of O, F, S and P; and B is Ni or Co.
