Use is disclosed of non-β-oxidizable fatty acids analogues of the general formula (I)

        Alkyl-X-CH<Sub>2</Sub>COOR

wherein alkyl represents a saturated or unsaturated hydrocarbon group of from 8-26 carbon atoms, X represents a sulphur atom and R is hydrogen or C<Sub>1</Sub>-C<Sub>4</Sub> alkyl, for the manufacture of a medicament to reduce the growth of cancer cells.
