The procedure for removing the skins from shelled nuts and seeds consists of subjecting them to freezing e.g. with liquid nitrogen acting only on the skins, which become fragile and can then be removed by air jets. The freezing is limited to one minute at the maximum, and is followed immediately by the air jet operation. The machine used to peel the nut kernels consists of an endless conveyor (1) passing through a freezing tunnel (2), followed by a chamber (5) with air jet blowers (12) and an extractor (13) for the skin debris. The chamber (5) is in the form of a tube (6) which slopes down from the conveyor and has the blowers and an outlet flap (10) at its lower end, the blowers being fitted to deliver the air jets in a tangential direction. The extractor (13) is connected to the tube's upper surface. A shutter (7) in the middle of the tube divides it into collecting (8) and skin removal (9) zones.</p> |
