An external storage device (31) connected to electronic equipment through a cable includes a switch (371) for selecting functions of the main unit of the external storage device. A user freely sets the function of the external storage device by simply operating the switch. This arrangement eliminates the need for disassembling the external storage device to switch the function thereof.
