Storage system, comprising a plurality of mutually spaced, separate storage tanks (1) located in a surrounding substrate and below the substrate surface, filled with oil (6) floating on ballast water (5) and with a roof (7) movable up and down and a system to maintain the oil surface at a constant level below the surface of the surrounding substrate by adding water to a storage tank from which oil is removed, while the storage tanks are connected to a common buffer reservoir (12).
