A surgical implement appointed for disposition within human or animal tissue is made to be electronically identifiable by affixing thereto a marker which transmits a predetermined code upon application of a magnetic field in the vicinity. A detecting means receives the transmitted code and correlates it with the implement. The correlation is verified and indicated, and the implement is positively identified.
