In a metal chair base of the type comprising an upright cylindrical hub and a plurality of legs radiating from the hub, each of the legs is a channel member containing a short channel section inserted within and welded to the leg, and also abutting and welded to the hub. The legs and hub may be chrome plated or otherwise finished before assembly of the legs to the hub, as welding of the channel sections to the hub does not cause visible weld marks or heat tarnishing of the plated hub and leg surfaces.
