Backup digital control channel for cellular telecommunications network

The method of implementing a backup digital control channel within a cellular telecommunications network involves detecting a failure of a digital control channel within a base station. A first transmitter in the base station is identified as having the failed digital control channel. An available time slot is detected in a second transmitter in the base station with the failed digital control channel. The available time slot is reconfigured as the backup digital control channel to replace the failed channel. A neighbour cell is informed that the backup channel has replaced the failed channel. A neighbour outer cell is informed that the backup channel has replaced the failed channel. Pref., a frequency shift control key within the base station having the detected failed control channel is updated with a verification colour code and channel number of the backup digital control channel.
