PURPOSE: A post-processing interpolation method and system in an MPEG decoder are provided to magnify the size of an image according to characteristic of the overall image to eliminate deterioration in picture quality and flickering. CONSTITUTION: A variation value in each direction is extracted from a pixel value adjacent to a pixel position to be interpolated. The maximum quantity of variation and minimum quantity of variation are obtained from the extracted variation value in each direction. Different weights are given to the maximum quantity of variation and minimum quantity of variation, and pixel values adjacent to the pixel position to be interpolated and the maximum quantity of variation and minimum quantity of variation.
