PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical pickup device in which cost and an the undesirable shift of an objective in the direction of tracking is effectively prevented without causing increase in its cost and weight. SOLUTION: The device has a first detection means 12 which detects tracking error signals including an offset signal component corresponding to the shift from a prescribed position in the tracking direction with respect to a moving member 3 of the objective 5 on the basis of the return light from a recording medium 1, and a second detection means 15 which detects only the offset signal on the basis of the return light from the recording medium 1. The device is so constituted that a tracking error signal, in which the offset signal component is removed by a differential arithmetic operation of the outputs from the first and the second detection means, is detected and the driving of the moving member 3 by a driving means 31 is so controlled that the objective 5 is located at a prescribed position with respect to the moving member 3 on the basis of the output from the second detection means 15.
