SOLUTION: It is discriminated whether a transmission document has the B4 width or not (step SA1). When the transmission document has the B4 width, it is discriminated whether the width should be set to 210 mm at the reduction or not (step SA2), and a flag indicating 210 mm or 216 mm is set (steps SA3 and SA4). When transmission is started (step SA5), the recording capability on the called side is confirmed by negotiation with the called side in accordance with transmission procedures (step SA6). When the recording paper on the called side has the A4 width, the transmission document is reduced from 256 mm to 210 mm or 216 mm and is transmitted (steps SA9 and SA10) in accordance with stored flag contents (step SA7).
