PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable to appropriately add signal charges continuous in the horizontal direction and then output them, in a horizontal CCD register. SOLUTION: Horizontal CCD registers 120 are provided each for a plurality of vertical CCD registers 110. Horizontal transfer electrodes of each horizontal CCD register 120 so installed as to correspond to two adjacent vertical CCD registers 110 are constituted of electrically independent eight transfer electrodes 131-138. Each of the transfer electrodes 131-138 is applied with a different kind of horizontal transfer pulse H11-H18. By controlling the horizontal transfer pulses H11-H18, an operation of continuously outputting continuous signal charges in each CCD register 120 just as in the conventional two-phase driving method, and an operation of appropriately adding continuous signal charges and then outputting them, can be selectively conducted.
