摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve picture quality by properly reproducing the gray level of the final image in a low gray level region. SOLUTION: This electrophotographic system, having an image reproducing engine that forms dot images with toner attached to virtual dot regions within pixels, reproduces an image whose gray level is represented by the halftone dots composed of a number of dot images within the pixels. An image processor in the electrophotographic system forms image reproduction data which, in a first region where input image data has low gray level, grows halftone dots of a first group according to the increase in the gray level, and in a second region where they have higher gray level than in the first region, grows halftone dots of a second group other than the points of the first group. In addition, it also forms the image reproduction data which begin to make the halftone dots of the second group grow while the halftone dots of the first group are growing in response to the increase in the gray level, and stop to make the halftone dots of the first group grow while the halftone dots of the second group are growing. Since the growth of the second group halftone dots starts during the growth of the first group halftone dots, in the vicinity of gray level where the growth of second group halftone dots are added are less affected by the edge effect, and therefore the light and shade of the final image can be properly reproduced.
