PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically adjust a gain in accordance with an input signal in advance of signal processing and to perform actual processing with an optimum gain. SOLUTION: An optical information reader has a laser beam emitting means for scanning and irradiating a read object with a laser beam, a light receiving means for receiving reflected light from the read object with respect to the laser beam emitted by the laser beam emitting means and outputting an input signal corresponding to the received light quantity, a waveform processing means for performing waveform processing of the input signal, a thresholding means for thresholding an output voltage signal of the waveform processing means and outputting the binary output voltage signal, and a decoding means for decoding the read object from the signal processed by the thresholding means. Thus, it is possible to correctly read signals of a barcode or the like.
