PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain high quality display by suppressing display irregularity. SOLUTION: Subpixels 120a, 120b and 120c are arranged in correspondence with the intersections of 3m scanning lines 112 which are extended and formed in the X direction and n data lines 114 which are extended and formed the a Y direction. Subpixels which are adjacent to each other in the Y direction are grouped together and driven as pixels 120. In a first mode, subpixels that constitute one pixel are individually turned on or off in accordance with the gradation data which indicate the gradation of the pixel. In a second mode, voltages corresponding to the gradation data that indicate the gradation of the pixel are commonly applied to the subpixels which constitute one pixel. Thus, the signals supplied to the date lines are sufficient to be binary in either one of the modes.
