PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device and an image forming device which enable a user to easily view various information without doing any special operation. SOLUTION: The character quantity of character information to be displayed is detected and a display area is set to the proper size according to the character quantity. Namely, a 1st display area where the character information is displayed and a 2nd area where information including the character information and graphic information are prepared as the display area; when the detected character quantity is smaller than a reference quantity (NO at step S53), the character information is displayed in the 1st area and the graphic information and other information are displayed in the 2nd area (step S54). When the detected character quantity is larger than the reference quantity, on the other hand, the display area for the character information is expanded to both the 1st and 2nd areas (step S55).
