The control column (6) of a fork-lift truck has a D shaped handle (11) which surrounds a lever (1) which controls the hydraulic pump. The lever (1) is pivoted in a slot in the column and is attached to a rod (16) inside the column. The lever is locked in position by a small bell crank lever (2) with one arm (3) abutting against the bottom (4) of the slot (5). The other arm (8) of the bell crank lever lies directly underneath the upper part of the handle so that the bell crank lever cannot be inadvertently operated and cause a loss hydraulic pressure which would allow the fork load to fall.
