Covers for edges of tyre sub-tread reinforcement - incorporating folded plies to inhibit delamination or cracking

The borders of a hoop of tyre subtread reinforcement plies comprising one flat ply partly enclosed by a folded ply are covered by ancillary strips which extend for 3-20 mm both over and beyond the edge of the two main plies and are draped to cover the lateral faces of the main plies. The border cover strips may be of rubberised fabric or of a sheet rubber incorporating a fibrous filler. Opt. the outer edges of the cover strip are thicker than the panel superimposed on the main plies: pref. the outer edges of the covers extend 5-20 mm radially. The ancillary covers inhibit delamination or cracking of the borders of the main subtread reinforcement plies.
