PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely read the base density of a negative even with respect to a cut off film. SOLUTION: In a scanner for reading a film image, a base position is detected by retrieving an area being wider than a part between frames obtained by a frame position decision, and the base density is decided according to the base position.
