New compounds comprising multiple chromophores joined together in a star shape, especially in tetrahedral arrangement, useful e.g. as dyes and pigments, and as tracers for scientific applications

Compounds (I) comprising multiple chromophores (light-absorbing molecular substructures) joined together in a star shape are new. (I) preferably comprise four chromophore units in a tetrahedral arrangement. Independent claims are also included for the following processes: (a) condensing perylene-3,4,9,10-tetracarboxylic acid-3,4-anhydride 9,10-imide to form a compound of formula (IA); (b) reducing tetra-p-nitrophenylmethane with hydrazine hydrate and Raney nickel; (c) reacting pentaerythrityl tetrabromide with carboxylic acid imides to give tetrachromophore dyes.
