The method involves encoding all possible header elements or the most frequently occurring header elements using a code word table and transmitting code words instead of header elements. Current header information is predicted using the relevant code words for the associated header elements. The latest statistically next most significant header element is associated with the next shortest code word. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for implementing the method of decoding a compressed header data stream, use of the method for header compression according to the H.26L standard, a method of compressing data for transmission with header information, use of the method for header compression for video encoding according to the H.26L standard and an arrangement for implementing the method.
