PURPOSE: A method for exchanging data between portable phones is provided to easily carry out the data exchange between two portable phones through IWF(Inter-Working Function) data service or PIWF(Proxy IWF) data service. CONSTITUTION: If a caller, who wants to transmit data, makes a telephone call using his portable phone, the calling side portable phone sends an origination message to a BS(Base Station)(S500). An IWF processes the data call and transmits a signal to inform the caller that the calling side portable phone has been connected with a called side's portable phone(S510). In this case, both connected portable phones are operated in a data exchange mode. Accordingly, the calling side potable phone regards all the data but the control data transmitted from the IWF as the data transmitted from the other side's portable phone(S520). If the data exchange is completed, the caller pushes any key button and terminates data transmission. Or if the other side rings off, the BS transmits a BS release order to the caller's portable phone so that the caller can terminate the data exchange and disconnect the connection with the other side's portable phone(S530).
