The use of a three-phase supply and motor enables production of greater power to start engine without weight increase. The starting system comprises an electrical supply (13) providing direct current, and an electric drive motor (14) which is powered from this supply. The supply consists of a battery of accumulators following by a voltage converter. The converter consists of a number of conversion modules whose input are connected in parallel and whose outputs are connected in series. The electric motor is independent of the gas turbine (10) to be started. The output shaft of the motor (15) is capable of being mechanically coupled to the input shaft (17) of the gas turbine. The motor is a synchronous motor supplied with a three-phase alternating electrical supply. This is controlled by an oscillator (18) connected to the supply.
