The present invention provides a composite material with excellent wear resistance in which there is minimal fall-off of ultra-hard particles such as a diamond. The composite material includes ultra-hard particles and a hard material such as a cemented carbide. The content of the ultra-hard particles in this composite material is between 10% and 30% by volume. The ultra-hard particles are dispersed in the composite material so that the Vickers hardness of the composite material is in the range of +/-15% to that of the hard material. cBN may be used for the ultra-hard particles. <IMAGE>
