Magnetic or magnetizable poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) carrier material (A) for reversible binding of nucleic acid (NA) is modified by chemical reaction with a germanium-containing compound (I). Independent claims are also included for the following: (a) method for preparing (A); (b) method for isolating and/or purifying NA, or derivatives, using (A); and (c) kit for method (b).
