PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optically active compound exhibiting high HTP(helical twisting power) and having intense polar group, to provide a liquid crystal composition containing the above compound, drivable at low voltage, quick in response and small in the change in natural pitch in response to temperature change, and to provide a liquid crystal device using the above composition. SOLUTION: This optically active compound is shown by the general formula I (R1 is an optically active group; n is 0 or 1; ring A to C are each a 1,4- phenylene group, naphthalene-2,6-diyl group, phenanthrene-2,7-diyl group, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalene-2, 6-diyl group, decahydronaphthalene-2,6-diyl group, trans-1,3-dioxane-2,5,-diyl group, pyridine-2,5- diyl group, pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group, pyrazine-2, 5-diyl group or pyridazine-2, 5-diyl group; wherein at least two H atoms in each of the ring A to C are F atoms; Y1 and Y2 are each a single bond, -COO-, -OCO-, -C≡C-, -CH=CH-, -CF=CF- or -CH2CH2-; and Z1 is CN, CF3O or F). |
