PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester-based binder fiber having a noncrystalline copolyester with no crystal melting point as the binder component, with low thermal shrinkage, capable of obtaining good-quality paper sheets through wet papermaking process, and to provide a method for producing the above binder fiber. SOLUTION: This polyester-based binder fiber is composed of a polyalkylene terephthalate >=220 deg.C in melting point as the fiber-forming component and a noncrystalline copolyester with no crystal melting point and a glass transition point of 50-100 deg.C as the binder component, and has the number of agglutinations of <=100/0.1 g, sheet area shrinkage percent of <=30% and fiber length of 2-30 mm.
