PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To clearly mark reception data and intrinsic data of a timber at a predetermined position (e.g. a center) of a butt end irrespective of an outer diameter of the timber. SOLUTION: A method for marking the butt end of the timber comprises the steps of scattering dusts of a surface of the butt end of the timber 18 by a water cleaning unit 16, immersing the timber with water, and giving a suitable moisture to the butt end of the timber 18. The method further comprises the step of then forming a film at the butt end with an oily paint by a paint film forming unit 17. A color of the film is a color having a clear contrast with a print to be marked by a measuring unit 5. The method also comprises the steps of stopping a conveyor 9 when the timber 18 is conveyed to a position of the marking unit 5, and marking the reception data and the intrinsic data or the like of the timber to the butt end of the timber 18 by the unit 5.
