PURPOSE: An automatic gain controller(AGC) and a method for peaking prevention used in an optical disk play system are provided to prevent peaking occurrence in AGC output signal due to defect of optical disk play signal. CONSTITUTION: An automatic gain controller(AGC) for peaking prevention used in an optical disk play system includes a capacitor, an amplifying part(24), a peak detector(18), a gm amplifier(20), and a peaking controlling part(22). The capacitor charges voltage corresponding to control current as control voltage. The amplifying part inputs optical disk play signal as input signal, and amplifies the input signal with gain corresponding to the charged control voltage to generate the input signal to output signal. The peak detector detects peak voltage from the output signal. The gm amplifier converts the detected peak voltage into current and generates the converted current as control current. The peak controlling part prevents the capacitor from being charged by the control current at a defect area, and controls the control voltage at the defect area to maintain the control voltage before occurrence of the defect area.
