The dummy oak beam (1) is fixed to a modern ceiling to obtain an antique exposed beam effect. It is of a segmental synthetic construction complete with imitation metal straps (5). The segments (1) are of a trough section to reduce the unit weight, each incorporating a strap formation (5) on one end. The formation (5) stands proud of the segment end (6) to provide a rebate locating the end (7) of the neighbouring segment and masking the joint.
