An image from a total internal reflection hologram 1 is reconstructed by arranging the hologram in relation to the first face of a coupling body 3, generating a substantially collimated illumination beam 8, directing the beam though a second face of the coupling body so that it reconstructs the image recorded in the hologram, recycling at least once the light in the illumination beam that is reflected from the hologram by redirecting it though the second face of the coupling body so that it also reconstructs the image recorded in the hologram, and scanning the illumination and recycled beams 19, 21 across the hologram. Glass substrate 2, silicon wafer 4, photoresist layer 5, scanning stage 13, mirrors 17, 11, 14 and 18 and focusing system 23, 24 are shown.
