PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a toroidal continuously variable transmission that can improve the yield of a material for a roller and suppress its production cost, and provide a working method for the roller of the toroidal continuously variable transmission that can suppress its production cost and increase its productivity. SOLUTION: A ring-like recess parts 30d, 30e are formed by lathe turning around the central shaft of both side faces of 30b, 30c of a disk-like material 30. Furthermore, an outer periphery surface 30a is primarily lathe turned and the disk-like material with the recesses 30d, 30e is hardened by heat treatment. Thereafter, the peripheral wall of a small-diameter side of the other recess 30d is chucked and at least an outer peripheral surface 30a is finished by a secondary lathe turning.
