PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photoreactive polymer liquid crystal which can improve the orientation of a mesogen and develop optical anisotropy sufficient as a birefringent film, and to provide the birefringent film using the same. SOLUTION: This photoreactive polymer liquid crystal used for birefringent films and having the mesogens and photoreactive groups on side chains is characterized in that a spacer group is absent between the mesogens and the photoreactive groups. The photoreactive polymer liquid crystal has, for example, a structure of the general formula 1 A is a polymer main chain represented by either of formulas 2 to 4; M is a mesogen corresponding to formula; (ph)- Z-(ph); (ph) is phenylene; Z is a single bond, C(O)O, OC(O), CH=CH or C≡C; B is a photoreactive group corresponding to X1-C(O)-CH=CH-(ph1)-Yn or (ph)- CH=CH-C(O)-X2; (m) is an integer of 2 to 12}.
