<p>There is disclosed an apparatus and a method for stacking elongate items (3) with irregular side edges. In order automatically to form layers (5) in a stack, a conveyor (2) has several succeeding rows of first stops that each have their own individual actuating unit (10). Hereby, a single item may be released at a time and advanced synchronously with a displacing of a chain (17) comprising second stops (8). The items (3) are placed in interspaces (19) between these stops and are displaced along supporting forks (6) by stepwise advancing of the chain (17) until a desired layer is formed. The forks (6) are then retracted for placing the layer uppermost in the stack (7). As the items are advanced with a position in the interspaces (19), each layer (5) may be formed by items with irregular side edges. <IMAGE></p> |
