PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a plastic optical fiber which ensures a small initial transmission loss and a slight increase of transmission loss during use at a high temperature and to provide an optical wave guide. SOLUTION: The optical fiber has a core layer comprising a polycarbonate resin having 0.2-1.0 [dl/g] intrinsic viscosity [η] obtained by reacting compounds of formulae (A) and (B) or compounds of formulae (A), (B) and (C) with a carbonate forming compound. The amount of the monomer of the formula (B) is 20-50 wt.% of the total amount of the monomers of the formulae (A)-(C).
