PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an ultraviolet absorbing copolymer having a high ultraviolet absorptivity, good water solubility and excellent compatibility with polyvinyl alcohol. SOLUTION: This ultraviolet absorbing copolymer is a copolymer (having 1,000-1,000,000 weight-average molecular weight) of (A) a hydrophilic or a water- soluble polymerizable monomer represented by general formula (1) [wherein, R1 is a hydrogen atom or methyl; R2 is an alkylene; R3 is hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl or phenyl; and n is an integer of 2-30] with (B) a polymerizable ultraviolet absorbing monomer represented by general formula (2) [wherein, at least one of R4, R5 and R6 is a polymerizable double bond-containing group; others may each be the same or different and are each an alkyl, an alkoxy, cyano, hydroxy, a halogen atom, carboxy or an alkoxycarbonyl]. |
