PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a valve timing control device for an internal combustion engine in which the responsiveness within a control range and stability outside the range are secured and further, the durability is secured without increasing the power capacity of a drive circuit or an OCV coil. SOLUTION: The valve timing control device is provided with the intake and exhaust valves 31 and 32, the operation condition detecting means 3, 11 and 14, a target valve timing calculation means 21, the valve timing variable mechanisms 15 and 16, the actual valve timing detection means 14, 17 and 18, a control amount calculation means 21 for calculating a control amount from the target and actual valve timings and the engine operation condition and the actual valve timing control means 19 and 20 for outputting the control amount to the valve timing variable mechanisms as an output control amount. The device is characterized in that when the target valve timing is outside a prescribed control range, the control amount calculated by the control amount calculation means is not made to be that outputted to the actual valve timing control means.
